For internationally recruited staff members, subject to fulfilling
certain criteria, CERN pays an international indemnity aimed at compensating the expenditure associated with the integration of the member of the personnel and his family in the local area. Once an indefinite contract has been awarded, the amount of the international indemnity decreases annually to reach zero at the end of the sixth year following the award of the contract.
