Staff Members, fellows, students (doctoral, technical, summer and administrative) together with their families/partners and apprentices are protected against the financial consequences of illness and accidents by a health and accident insurance scheme known as the CHIS (CERN Health Insurance Scheme).
For Users and Associates the health insurance cover is the responsibility of their home institute and must be of an adequate level, i.e. sufficient to cover health expenses in Geneva and neighbouring France. If this protection is not provided they can obtain coverage (excluding disability arising from work accidents) at their own expense with the CERN Health Insurance Scheme by contacting UNIQA.
Applications for voluntary membership of the Normal or Reduced Health Insurances must be made within 30 calendar days* of :
- the first day of the contract of association with CERN for members of the CERN personnel.
- the first day following the termination of compulsory membership as a member of the CERN personnel or membership as a member of the family.
*UNIQA may insist upon a retroactive payment
For the appropriate insurance protecting against disability take up an insurance ("Accidenta C-225") can be taken with UNIQA.
